Ever since I upgraded to OSX a few years ago, I have been searching for the ideal Font management solution. With OSX all of a sudden everything became confusing. There are font folders here and font folders there, “how do I install a font and get it to work?” If you are like me and have tons of fonts then the problem goes a little deeper, you now want to manage your fonts, not merely make them work.
Font Agent Pro makes it easy to organize all your fonts. Just drag your desired folder into the interface and FAP will scan the folder for valid fonts. You can even drag in your entire Hard Drive. FAP will copy (or move if you desire) all the fonts to a central location where they can be accessed or shared on a network. You can manage system fonts too.
I was very happy that I can now choose a font and it will work despite duplicates, no annoying messages, just a font that is accessible and works! Font Agent will auto-activate all Panther compliant apps and it comes with Plug ins that enable auto Activation for all the Adobe CS products (Including Photoshop), and Quark Xpress. When a font is detected in a document FAP will automatically turn on that font
Then there is the really cool stuff. The Font player. Highlight as many fonts as you like and then click on the button (a). The program will now cycle through all the selected fonts automatically. You use the slider (b) to control the speed of playback. Press the button (c) if you like a font. It will be added to a Font Player set that can be reviewed later on. The player will continue until you press the stop button. I like to use this feature to browse through all the fonts on my system and organize them into visual sets. (Just rename the Player set after each round)
The font compare is a great feature. You can now view several fonts together. You can choose the color, background color and size for a more accurate preview.
You can also print out sample sheets for your font books. If you want to save paper, you can print directly to PDF. Not hot? The older version of FAP was very sluggish on OSX. Version 2 has undergone some surgery and I am seeing vast speed improvements.
Because of the ease of use and powerful feature set, Font Agent Pro is the “Designers” Font manager. Good job on the upgrade Insider Software. I will have to give FAP a 5/5 for such a useful and easy to use product that makes our font headaches go away for good.
