Welcome to the (late) June issue of the CAFÉ cup.

This month things have been crazy around here and I am a bit late on the newsletter. I was out at Zion Canyon for Red Rock Revival (Strata's annual conference). I taught a few Photoshop sessions out there and they were very well received. Check out some pictures I took when we went on a hike through Zion National Park.

Tell your friends and get them to sign up on the list, they may just win a prize! As always this list will never be shared or sold to slimy spammers.
Tip: Draw straight lines - Hold down the shift key while drawing with the
brush, pencil or eraser and your lines will be perfectly straight.
Coffee with Colin - How do you get good at Photoshop?

I seem to be asked this question a lot. How do you master Photoshop? There are several strategies, but the most important thing to remember is that you will not become a pro in a week. I used to make it my goal to learn 1 new thing in Photoshop each day. Find an option that you are unfamiliar with and play around with it. Is there something that is tough and you always avoid it? Say the channels? Find out all you can and OWN it until you are an expert on that area. There are tons of useful tutorials on PhotoshopCAFE that will teach you useful techniques. I didn't just write them so that people would learn the final result. I have put little tips and methods into the tutorials to help you learn Photoshop. I also encourage you to get your hands on my training videos and books, they are there to help you to become a Photoshop Master. Don't forget the forum too! The forum (affectionatly known as the CAFE) is a great place to meet others, ask questions, learn, contribute and show off your masterpieces. Having said that, get your hands on as many good magazines as you can and pratice. Don't be afraid to experiment. Happy Photoshopping!

Create a spotlight effect with your Photos...

This month I am going to show you an alternative to lightening your photographs. Take a picture of a Porsche as an example, it is a little bit underexposed and could be touched up with just a little bit of levels or curves. Instead of just brightening the image which would be our natural instant, let’s create a bit more interest and instead create a spotlight effect.... more

My buddy Al Ward has written a new book. (I was the Technical Editor) This is what he has to say:

Attention Right-Brainers! You're an artistic visionary, right? In your head you imagine clever image fixes, fanciful photo manipulations, and artworks of startling genius. But when it comes to bringing these visions to life on your computer -- well, that’s the hard part. FAQ

Q: How resolution do I need for print?

A: When you are printing to a commercial press the rule of thumb is 2x the linescreen. The average linescreen for good quality coated paper is 150lpi (Magazines are 133lpi). 300ppi is a common resolution used for print. Also make sure you are in CMYK mode or the colors won't print. Save your images as Tif or Eps.

Q: I am trying to export a slice in ImageReady and I keep getting all the slices and HTML. How can I just export a single slice?

A: When you choose Save Optimized as... Choose Images only from the dropdown menu. This will stop the The html from being created. Choose the slice select tool and select your slice. Choose the "only use selected slice" option rather than Use all slices selection.

If you have a question please submit it the CAFE. It may just be featured in the next newsletter.

Tip: When you link and unlink layers in the layers palette, you don't have to click each link. Try holding down the mouse button and dragging down trough the links in the Layers Palette.
