Welcome to the December issue of the CAFÉ cup! Wow what a year it has been for PhotoshopCAFE! Last night I was presenting to a standing room only crowd at the Apple Store in Santa Monica, CA and thinking that this really has been a year when PhotoshopCAFE has been coming to the people. This year we have been all over the country and I have had the pleasure you meet many of you in person. In 2004 we have had 1.2 million visitors to the site and we're still growing! This month is our 4th Birthday. We are planning on ending the year with a bang. Check out our biggest contest yet, with near $6,000 in prizes including a copy of Creative Suite Premium from Adobe. I have just launched a new book and DVD and to celebrate Christmas and the holiday season, the newly designed cafe store (photoshopCD.com) is having a huge sale on all my CDs. Thanks for supporting the cafe this year. It's been a fun ride and look for lots of new and big things in 2005. New book and DVD Tell your friends and get them to sign up on the list, they may just win a prize. Prizes awarded weekly! As always this list will never be shared or sold to slimy spammers. Write to me and let me know what you would like to see in the Newsletter. CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS MONTHS WINNERS WHO ARE: Bryan Canavan - Down and Dirty Tricks DVD by Scott Kelby

| Coffee with Colin - Masking out an image | |
|
There are many reasons that we would want to mask out an image (AKA removing it from the background). When compositing images, this is one of the first things you will need to do. As various as the needs, there are also many methods. You can use the Extract tool in Photoshop or turn to 3rd party plug-ins such as Extensis Mask Pro and Knockout from Corel. These all work extremely well. My advice to you, experiment with different methods and you will find that some methods work better for different situations. For simple sharp objects, the pen tool cannot be beaten, for softer edges such as hair use the extract tool. For areas of solid color use, Color range, the magic wand or magic eraser tool. Whatever method you choose, remember to make sure that the edges are nice and clean. Here are a couple of tips to clean up the edges. Layer>Matting works well to remove white or black halos. Another way to remove white edges is to choose Select>Color Range, choose the Highlights setting and then click ok. I then use the eraser tool to clean up the edges. Another way is to load the layer selection then press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+I to inverse the selection. Choose Select>feather and enter a small number click ok and then hit the delete key to soften the edges, keep hitting the delete key to increase the effect.
