Who’s behind the mask?
Since I just mentioned a mask, I better tell you why that’s cool. Click the Mask button at the bottom of the layers palette. (If using an adjustment layer, the mask is already there, begging for your interaction). Click the mask, choose a black brush and paint on the image. Notice that you are painting away the masked layer and revealing the contents behind. Choose White, to paint back the masked layer. This is really useful for selective adjustments. What’s more gray is related to transparency, eg. A 50% gray color will paint 50% opacity. Even try a gradient and see what happens.
