creating my own layer styles, please help!

Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me. I am using CS3 to make layer styles, I have made a couple and they aren't great.
I am really looking to make some where the colour is lighter in the middle and gradually darkens to the edge. I have tried playing around and I just cant achieve the look I want. Is there a better program to make layer styles with or can anyone give me some advice for in Photoshop?
Thanks so much!!

Also if you have any link to tuts for making awesome layer styles I would really appreciate them too!
