Welcome to the August issue of the CAFÉ cup!

This month and next, PhotoshopCAFE is hitting the road! We will have a booth at DL Expo (Digital Lifestyle) and Photoshop World East. I will be in Long Beach, Orlando, New York and Montana with Photoshop Classes in most of the locations. I hope to see you at some of these events, come and say hi and mention that your from the cafe!

Don't forget to look for my regular Column in Photoshop User Magazine. I also have current articles in Photoshop Fix, Practical Web Projects and Web Design magazines. Also Check out Computer Arts for a demo of my CDs on the cover disk. I have a new book that is almost done, more about it next month. So yes, I have been busy :)

Tell your friends and get them to sign up on the list, they may just win a prize! As always this list will never be shared or sold to slimy spammers. We had over 250 new people sign up last week alone!

Thanks for supporting the CAFE and helping it to become one of the and fastest growing and largest Photoshop Communities in the world!

Tip:  Get Proofs Approved by Your Clients, Without E-mail

When used properly, e-mail streamlines workflows and enhances productivity. But e-mail attachments don’t give clients the tools they need to communicate changes clearly or effectively, and that leads to misunderstandings. See what can stop the turmoil:

Coffee with Colin - Fix it the easy way... please

I enjoy writing the "Coffee with Colin" Column because it gives me a place to rant a little about all kinds of things design and (sometimes) Photoshop related. Let me know if you enjoy being on the receiving end of my rants. This month I want to answer the much asked question about deleting Photoshop Preferences.

Q: I have had some problems with Photoshop and I was told to delete my preferences, is this dangerous and where are they?

A: When encountering unusual problems, resetting the prefs is usually the first step in troubleshooting.
The reason this works is because when you delete the preferences file the program is put back to its default state. When Photoshop restarts, new, clean prefs files are built. All the settings and libraries are reset to the factory default and this purges all the added brushes, color swatches, patterns, shapes, styles and gradients. If an item is corrupt in these libraries it can cause Photoshop to hang or crash. Also huge libraries will slow down the loading of Photoshop because all the libraries are loaded at start up. So be forewarned, back 'em up or lose 'em! You can save you libraries from the Preset manager: Edit>Preset manager. Select your items in the main window and choose save set. Do this for each library. (note: Only selected items will be saved)

Resetting the prefs.
I am not even going to tell you how to find the prefs. Why? Because you don't have to dig around and waste your valuable time. Just use this shortcut: While launching Photoshop hold down the Shift+Alt+Ctrl keys. (Shift+Option+Apple keys on Mac) You will now see a message saying "Reset Adobe Photoshop Settings File?" Click yes and its done. Now isn't that easier than going to HDD>Users>Current User>Libraries>Preferences>Adobe>Photoshop or something similar on your computer?

"I have played all the tutorials and worked several of them already.  This is great – it’s easy!  I have purchased several expensive books that the tutorials are way to long winded, and on occasion not properly presented.  Congratulations on a fine piece of work."
-Keith

"I purchased your "PhotoshopCafe LIVE" CD last weekend. I wanted you to know how absolutely GREAT it is.  I've thoroughly enjoyed going through every tutorial.  They are so easy to understand and just about every one of them came out exactly the way yours did."

FAQ

Q: What is a Layer Blending Mode?

A: A blending mode changes the way that an overlaying layer (above) interacts with the base layer. (beneath). You can change the blending mode by selecting your layer and then choosing a different option from the dropdown menu at the top of the layers window in the layers palette. The default is "normal". Experiment and see the results. The shortcut to cycle through the modes begins with choosing the move tool (black arrow from the toolbox). Now hold down shift and click on the plus key to move through the modes. Press the minus key to move the other way.

If you have a question please submit it the CAFE. It may just be featured in the next newsletter.

Tip: Leaping Layers!

Press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+N to create a new layer (add Alt/Option to skip the dialog box). Move layers by clicking Ctrl/Cmd+ [ and ] keys. Choose Alt/Option [ and ] to move between layers.
